The essential components of your vehicle's braking system comprise a master cylinder, servo, brake calipers, brake fluid and cylinders, disks, drums, pads, and shoes. These components are interconnected by a network of brake hoses and pipes. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is created in the master cylinder, which forces brake fluid through the pipes to activate pistons in the wheel hub assembly. This pressure applies friction material on the pads or shoes, resulting in the car's stopping power. Brake systems can be either disc brakes or drum brakes, and many modern cars have ABS as standard.
